Services You Can Get Through UPSC CSE
The exam selects candidates for many prestigious services. They are divided into three groups:All India Services (work across states and centre):
- Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
- Indian Police Service (IPS)
- Indian Forest Service (IFoS) – uses same prelims but separate exam
Group A Central Services:
- Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
- Indian Revenue Service (IRS – Income Tax and Customs)
- Indian Audit and Accounts Service (IAAS)
- Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS)
- Others like Defence Accounts, Ordnance Factories, etc.
Group B Services:
- Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Civil and Police Services

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Rules
Education:
- You need a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university.
- Final-year students can apply but must show proof later.
- No minimum marks required.
Age and Attempts:
- Minimum age: 21 years
- Maximum age (General): 32 years
- Relaxation: OBC – 3 years, SC/ST – 5 years, PwBD – up to 10 years extra
- Attempts: General – 6, OBC – 9, SC/ST – unlimited till age limit
Nationality:
- For IAS and IPS: Must be Indian citizen
- For other services: Indian citizens or certain eligible foreigners (check notification)
The exam has three stages.Stage 1: Prelims (Screening Test)
Objective-type papers.
- Paper 1: General Studies (200 marks)
Covers: History, Polity, Geography, Economy, Environment, Science, Current Affairs.
Marks count for clearing cutoff. - Paper 2: CSAT (200 marks)
Covers: Reading comprehension, logical reasoning, basic maths, decision-making.
Qualifying only – need 33% to pass.
Stage 2: Mains (Main Exam)
Written descriptive exam – 9 papers.Qualifying Papers (marks not added to rank):
- Indian Language (300 marks)
- English (300 marks)
